Significance of Research

2020-03-27

Research is able to provide solutions to things that are unknown, bridge gaps in knowledge and improve the way that healthcare professionals work. 1

However, there is a trend lately that appears to reduce research to publish for promotion. This trend has led some members of the academia scrambling for few big publishers or journals registered - or as is popularly known, indexed - in their databases. The practice of publish for promotion undermines the importance of research and results in shoddy research.  It places the academia at the mercy of publishers of research that will accept only articles they consider suitable for their journals and reject those they deem not suitable for their publications notwithstanding the quality of such research papers. Again, it deviates from the spirit which informed the academic aphorism, “publish or perish.”

It is important to understand the essence of research. Doing research merely to secure job tenure or promotion leads to mindless copying from existing research and pasting to form your own paper for publication. This has made ISJASSR rejected a number of articles during desk review. ISJASSR will not waste the time of peer reviewers on a paper that merely reproduces existing paper by just using different words or copying word for word in large part. The Unite for Sight module 6, stresses that, “research must always be of high quality in order to produce knowledge that is applicable outside of the research setting.” 2 Research MUST ADD SOMETHING NEW TO KNOWLEDGE. ISJASSR is delighted in publishing high quality research that adds to or enriches existing scholarly literature. ISJASSR encourages, especially members of the academia not to wait until there is promotion around the corner before rushing to the press with a paper. Rather, an academic ought to make research a habit and become outstanding by the impact factor of his or her article and contribution to knowledge. ISJASSR shares the philosophy of John Armstrong, “…Aside from the pure pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, research is linked to problem-solving.”3 Imagine that researchers were proactive to have unearthed a cure for the coronavirus, the number of deaths and socio-economic problems associated with it globally would have been averted. Scholars who write only for promotion are not scientific researchers but mere authors.

In discussing the importance of research, Leann Zara points out that, “the main purpose of research is to inform action, to prove a theory, and contribute to developing knowledge in a field of study.” 4 A detailed research enables students build critical thinking skills, effective analytical, research, and communication skills. Such skills are globally sought-after and beneficial.  Research forms the basis of governmental policies around the globe. Hence Mary-Louise Kearney, Director of the UNESCO Forum on Higher Education, Research and Knowledge, has stated that; “Knowledge generated by research is the basis of sustainable development, which requires that knowledge be placed at the service of development, be converted into applications, and be shared to ensure widespread benefits.” 5 This is where ISJASSR comes in. The primary aim of ISJASSR, is to share high quality research papers through publishing to ensure their widespread benefits. If you have done a painstaking research, consider sharing it with the world by publishing it in ISJASSR.

ISJASSR publishing fees is affordable. It also has a waiver policy for researchers who are not able to afford publication fees.
