PREVENTIVE HEALTH EDUCATION APPROACHES AGAINST MOTHER-TO-CHILD TRANSMISSION OF HIV/AIDS AMONG HEALTH WORKERS IN PMTCT HOSPITALS IN ANAMBRA STATE NIGERIA

ABSTRACT: Preventive health approaches especially those pertaining to fundamental health of human being are of profound importance in every health institutions in Anambra state. This research work intends to assess the preventive health education approaches against PMTCT of HIV/AIDS among health workers in selected hospitals in Anambra State, Nigeria. The study design was a descriptive cross-sectional survey. The study population comprised health workers providing services for PMTCT of HIV in Anambra State. Yamane Taro sample size calculation was used to determine the sample size of the study and multi-stage sampling was used to select 237 health workers from the three levels of health institution. Self-structured questionnaire was used to obtain information from the health workers. Data obtained were presented in tables and graph form. Results show that lecture (30%), workshop (27%) and seminar as well as conference (27%) were the health education approaches that are mostly employed in the PMTCT facilities studies. Also, it was found out that ignorance (29.1%), lack of instructional materials (52.7%) and unavailability of funds (41%) were the major challenges facing the utilization of health education methods in the PMTCT health facilities. Chi-Square test for independence was applied. It gave a degree of freedom of 2.7 and a significant value of 1.000. Thus, it was observed that there is no significant difference between health education approaches among health workers and their educational qualification. Pearson correlation coefficient and Spearman rank correlation coefficient were used t. This gives a significant value of 0.196 for Pearson correlation coefficient and 0.912 for Spearman rank correlation coefficients. Thus, there is no significant difference between health education approaches utilized in the PMTCT hospitals and level of health institution. It is recommended that, instructional materials should be made available in the PMTCT, Also seminars and workshops on educational approaches should be organized in the various PMTCT hospitals.

An analytical study of the role of religion and education in social development: the Nigeria experience

Religion is a global phenomenon and practice that plays a predominant role in the spiritual formation and traditional belief system of any nation. Education on the other hand is believed to be a primary driver of national development. The multidimensional impact of religion and education cannot be underemphasized. Their interplay has always resulted in positive development in almost all sectors and concerns of the country. It is truism that Nigeria is reckoned as one of the most religious countries of the world. History equally has it that religious movements and institutions have helped in the educational development of Nigeria. Undoubtedly, Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country, with an estimated 200 million people, and with more than 250 distinctive ethnic and linguistic groups. There are three (3) major religious movements in Nigeria which include African Traditional Religion, Christianity and Islam. Religion is often misconstrued as source of political divides and ethnic disparities in most African countries, especially Nigeria. Religion is oftentimes employed in the political system of the country and has also influenced policy makers, and religious leaders in their decisions. Education has ever since given many Nigerians the knowledge and power to change their world for the good of all. Against these backdrops, this study evaluates the nature and impact of religion and education on the Nigerian society by exploring the manifestations of their existence in the country. Qualitative research method and the theory of crossing and dwelling will be employed in this work. The paper observes that religion and education are the driving force for national development. It concludes that religion as a unifying factor in the society should always work in synergy with education to achieve the expected result in the society and development of the nation. The paper therefore recommends that religion and education are indispensable factors for national development and should be employed for the betterment of the society.

The Response of the Church to Abortion: A Socio-Religious Inquiry

Discussions on abortion are aged long issue which have gotten divergent responses from scholars according to their personal views. Despite these contributions for and against abortion, the rate seems to still be on the increase especially among the adolescents and as such it demands the attention and the voice of the church as a watchdog and conscience of the society. In an attempt to write this article, the authors make use of qualitative and quantitative research method. The paper finds that abortion has been an aged long issue which has always been practiced within the society. It goes further to observe that there are unethical teachings that are supporting abortion which have made it to continue unabated. The paper concludes that abortion is wrong and should be discouraged, unless in the case of a critical condition in which it is the last resort to saving the life of the mother. It therefore recommends that mothers should try to instill in the consciousness of their daughters the dangers associated with abortion which in some cases can lead to barrenness. It also recommends that the church should rise up in her preaching against abortion not only because of the physical damage done to the bodies but also because of God’s rejection of such and the eternal damnation that comes on those that practice same.

Planning and management of tertiary education for sustainable national income and economic growth rate in Nigeria

Tertiary education is the apex level of education in the world over. It therefore calls for proper management to enhance sustainable national and economic growth. The paper discusses planning and management of tertiary education and mechanism to improve national income growth rate, roles of tertiary education in sustaining national income and growth rate and economic development. Human capital resource development has been observed to be a key element in determining national income growth rate. Education of entire citizenry is very necessary if any nation is to achieve rapid economic growth. It is recommended among others that openness is another important predictor for driving growth but must be cautiously allowed in order not to discourage indigenous manufacturers or shut them out of business.
